This is a vintage Berber rug from the Middle Atlas Mountains in Morocco. Such carpets were never intended to appear on the commercial markets of Europe or the United States; they were intended to be used in homes by Berber families. Only natural dyes were used and wool sourced locally. Over the years, more than half a century later, the intricate design remained preserved only in part creating an nearly ghostly effect (half a rug; half a ghost). This rug is symbolic of the condition of the nomadic cultures in North Africa and beyond; almost gone.
