Antique 19th c. Turkoman Tekke Main Carpet
Central Asia, circa 1850–1875
An impressive 19th-century Tekke Turkmen main carpet, woven with five columns of large Tekke güls across a warm madder-red field. The primary güls are separated by smaller geometric ornaments, creating the disciplined and rhythmic composition characteristic of classical Tekke weaving.
The restrained palette combines several shades of red with deep indigo, ivory and soft coral tones. Subtle variations in the drawing and colour give the carpet an individual character absent from later, more standardized examples.
Particularly notable are the extensive borders and the survival of the decorated end panels, or elems. Rows of small octagonal medallions and densely worked chevron motifs frame the central field and give the carpet a powerful architectural structure.
The five-column format and relatively regular arrangement suggest a date in the middle to third quarter of the 19th century, approximately 1850–1875. A substantial and highly decorative example of traditional Tekke Turkmen weaving, retaining the monumental presence for which these large tribal carpets are admired.
