Siane — Papua New Guinea–Inspired Contemporary Rug

This remarkable multicoloured rug was created as a homage to the tribal art of Papua New Guinea, particularly a work believed to be associated with the Siane people of the Eastern Highlands.

Three linked, totem-like geometric forms rise through the centre of the composition, set against irregular horizontal bands of coral, rust, pink, charcoal, cream and muted blue-green. The restrained, slightly weathered colours soften the design while preserving its strong graphic presence.

This rug forms part of our continuing project to create contemporary rugs inspired by tribal art and textile traditions from around the world. It is not a reproduction, but a modern interpretation that translates the visual energy and expressive character of the original artwork into a distinctive floor textile.

Size: 284 × 193 cm
Approximately: 9 ft 4 in × 6 ft 4 in

Note: The design particularly recalls the Ceremonial Board (gerua wenena), made by the Siane people around 1955 and now in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), accession no. M.2008.66.17.
