The Manastir Collection
The Manastir Collection presents contemporary handwoven rugs inspired by the distinctive kilims traditionally associated with Manastir and the wider southern Balkans. These historic textiles are immediately recognisable by their bold horizontal bands, intense contrasts of red and yellow and other colours, stepped prayer niches and small, enigmatic geometric motifs.
Situated at a meeting point between Balkan, Ottoman and Anatolian cultures, Manastir developed a textile tradition of remarkable originality. Its kilims combine architectural forms with an almost modern sense of abstraction: large areas of colour are interrupted by irregular lines, subtle changes of tone and motifs reduced to their simplest geometric form.
Our rugs reinterpret this visual language rather than reproduce individual antique examples. The characteristic Manastir niche and striped field have been simplified and rearranged to create designs suited to contemporary interiors, while retaining the vitality and handmade irregularity of the originals.
Every rug in the collection is available as a bespoke order. Dimensions and colours can be adapted to suit a particular room, and each piece is individually woven by hand. Natural variations in colour, line and texture form an essential part of its character, making every rug unique.
