Beni Hassan wedding Blankets from Southern Iraq

This is a wedding blanket from the village of Beni Hasan inhabited by Ma’dan Marsh Arab People

‘[These blankets are made] solely by Ma’dan women except for the hand spinning of wools, which is done by both sexes. (/) Initially hand-woven blankets are purchased from the Bedouin or Kurds in the nearby market towns. (/) [They are] elaborately embroidered by young Ma’dan girls for their marriage beds and sometimes by mothers for their sons.’

Description

A rare gem from a once thriving community of the so-called Marsh Arabs who are however more related to Sumerians, the inhabbitants of Mesopotamia than Arabs.
